Working from home is becoming more popular, and it can benefit both the employees and employers. Staff may achieve a better work-life balance, and their happiness boosts production, which pleases the company all while reducing expenses. Before the pandemic struck, employers were frequently concerned about the impact of providing this valued perk on productivity, teamwork, and communication. But as the pandemic left no choice for organisations to move into remote working, according to new study, working remotely is not appearing to be the ideal experience that many people had hoped for. They say that working from home in your sweatpants has become a reality. Longer hours, numerous virtual meetings, and blurring borders between business and home life are common trade-offs that make it difficult for employees in the long run.

Do people choose to return to work or choose to stay at home?

In a study entitled, working from home is revolutionising the United Kingdom’s labour market by  Shivani Taneja, Paul Mizen, Nicholas Bloom, says that since the outbreak, attitudes about working from home have shifted dramatically. The findings of a poll of 5,000 employed people in the UK in January and February 2021, showed that nearly half of the UK workforce is presently working from home. The survey goes on to show that only 19% of UK employees say they would completely return to all pre-COVID activities, indicating how long COVID will have an influence on people’s attitudes, with over 80% citing difficulties with packed tube trains and lifts.  Concerns over commuting, public transport, bringing illnesses home to children and increased costs of living, associated with going back to the office were also major factors. 

In another separate study, according to the Martec Group survey, just 24% of employees felt their stress levels decreased when working from home, while 42% reported increasing stress levels. We can take into account mental health on whether people would choose to return to the office or stay at home especially now that we are still far from going back to pre-COVID operations due to different variants appearing.
